On Lucifer : Everyone has a little Lucifer inside him
Years ago I would have avoided watching the show, Lucifer like avoiding something disgusting because of my religious belief. And now I found myself come across path with the show in my journey of deconstruction. I no longer believe that there is a evil persona constantly trying to plot plans to make me fall. I believe, as Mr. Morningstar constantly has to explain himself, that everyone needs to take responsibility of his own deeds instead of blaming the devil. Ironically, I have found myself started to find interest in faith again after watching four seasons of this series. Besides, it cracks me up that Lucifer is so sensitive to every comment about God such as a simple catchphrase like, Thank God. He is simply a guy, devil or not, with a very complicated relationship with his father. Despite his spoken hatred of God, there is a longing for His love deep down inside his heart. He seems to misunderstand everything about his father and create a maze in his own head.
The main structure of this show is Lucifer working with detectives of LAPD to catch criminals but what really makes it more substantial is the therapy line. As a person who is also going to therapy, I found many of the things sharing between the therapist and Lucifer are actually helpful. Especially, how he is externalizing his issues through things and circumstances surround him like his self indulgent in sex, drug and parties. Even though our drugs of choices are completely different, I relate to his escapes to pleasure instead of facing his problems. Amusingly, he is very good at taking the wrong messages from what the therapist tries to tell him and tries to search for answers in his own ways through working with the murdering cases.
At first I found this show a bit juvenile and that the celestial figures are worse than human beings with emotions and relationships. But it gets better as the show progresses especially in the season three and four. And you will be disappointed if you come to find the adrenaline of demonic horror and detective thriller from this series. It is completely about Lucifer's own personal growth, self-acceptance and love between Chole and him, even though there is no shortage of his antics for a good laugh.
I have never ever wanted to rewatch a series after finishing, but now I find myself play the season one again, because I do miss seeing Lucifer's charming face and I want to take notes from some of the pithy phrases they say in the show. All in all, each of us has a little Lucifer inside of us. We have this dark side of us that wants to revenge in our own way when others wrong us, indulges ourselves like there is no tomorrow, that secretly hates ourselves and is in denial of our true feelings and thoughts. In the end, we all need to take responsibility and grow a little otherwise we just rot in our own "hell" and never truly live. I cannot wait for the release of season five and continue on this spiritual journey with Lucifer.
